Following the removal of a cataract in May I was waiting for new spectacles to match my new eyesight. In the meantime - two months altogether - I was not allowed to drive, nor swim, nor do some of the other things that normally fill much of my time. I was allowed to blog in theory, except that hours of screen time gave me a headache, which I'd rather avoid. (It wasn't you I was avoiding!)

In late June and early July I made good use of my free bus pass to reach some local places.

Took part in Chester Heritage Festival for the first time, selling copies of Chester Writers' thirty year anniversary anthology, which I was involved in editing at the end of 2023. I'm now chair of Chester Writers. Managed to have my photograph (holding a copy of 30 Years of Chester Writers) included in the festival programme.

Husband and I went out to eat quite often on a week's staycation (preferable to one person having to do all the driving). Found that Frankie's and Benny's near our local cinema uses ROBOTS to bring the food to the tables!

Although I grew up in Birkenhead I've never visited some of the more interesting places it has to offer - like the 900 year old Benedictine Priory where monks used to provide a ferry across the Mersey, centuries before anybody had dreamed of Gerry and the Pacemakers. From the top of the restored church tower you can see the Liverpool waterfront with the "three Graces", two cathedrals, and a new football stadium under construction. Further along the banks of the Mersey you can see the distinctive industrial towers at Stanlow .

As it was just around the corner from the Priory, it would have been rude to ignore the local Glen Affric brewery. We sampled some of their fine beer. If you like stout or dark beer I recommend Peninsula. One advanatage of riding on the bus instead of driving is that you don't have to ask yourself if it's OK to have a beer. Happy days.
