When the Ancestry DNA results arrived it turned out I'm more Welsh than anything else. Not a total surprise given what I already knew about my dad's family tree. After that 44% from northern English counties Cheshire and Staffordshire, which Ancestry described as "the Midlands" - how very dare they?!
All other DNA strands are related to various parts of Scandinavia, as shown in the coloured areas on the map. I'll take that. The Wirral, where I was born, has a rich Viking history. It looks like it is on the wrong side of England for a Viking invasion, but centuries ago they went to Ireland first, then headed east again and landed on the Wirral. I'm told there's a high incidence of Viking DNA among people native to this region between the River Dee and the River Mersey.
I joined the Wirral Viking Trail Facebook group run by Prof. Stephen Harding and Sue Bishop (both of whom used to go to the same primary school I attended: Overchurch Juniors) to find out more.
