There is a vanishingly small number of mediaeval bridges in Europe with shops built on them which still survive as functioning shopping streets. One of these few is Pulteney bridge in Bath. I made a point of buying a pastry for breakfast during our February visit, from a bakery situated on top of the bridge. Nineteen years ago, in Venice, I treated myself to a pair of earrings from a shop on the Rialto Bridge. (Maybe one day I'll be able to purchase something on the Ponte Vecchio in Florence/Firenze? I can dream.) Picture of the bridge spanning the river in Bath courtesy of Rose Brocklehurst. Cold, murky water in contrast to our next visit.

My sister, one daughter, and daughter-in-law were with me for a visit to the warm waters of Bath's thermal spa . For two hours we dipped, steamed, dripped, enjoyed fountains and bubbles in the luxuriously warm mineral waters. A lovely late birthday treat courtesy of my sister. (Be grateful that taking photos inside the spa was not allowed.)
